This Year's Grain Harvest Expected 35 Pct Higher than last Year

This year's grain harvest (wheat, rye, oats, barley, and triticale) should be 35.1 percent higher than last year. According to an estimate of the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic as of August 15 of this year, the estimated harvest per hectare should reach 4.53 tons, while in 2007 it was 3.46 tons. The overall grain harvest according to the official estimate should be almost 2.927 million tons of grain crops, while in 2007 it was 2.167 million tons. The total sown area in 2008 is 646,400 hectares, which is three percent more than last year.

Estimated per hectare harvest of wheat as of August 15 is 4.87 tons, rye 3.11 tons, barley 4.35 tons, oats 2.34 tons, and triticale 3.58 tons. In 2007 the per hectare harvest was 3.82 tons of wheat, 2.63 tons of rye, 3.14 tons of barley, 1.79 tons of oats and 2.86 tons of triticale. Estimated harvest of rape seed this year should rise from 2.09 tons to 2.72 tons per hectare, potatoes from 16.28 tons to 20.94 tons per hectare.
