Slovakia wants to create a unified platform in the area of information security to build information society based on legal foundations ensuring appropriate protection and credibility of the country's digital environment. This information comes from the National Strategy for Information Security in the Slovak Republic, which the Cabinet approved at its session on Wednesday. The approved strategy should influence Slovakia's business environment positively, since it is meant to upgrade data integrity, authority, reputation, and transparency of entities.

The National Strategy has been designed for 2008-2013. The Finance Ministry, which submitted the paper to the Cabinet session, intends to use money from the state budget, structural funds allocated for the Informatization of Society operational program, and finances from the private sector for this purpose. The content of the paper is based upon strategic materials approved by the Cabinet, upon directives, regulations, recommendations and strategic papers drafted by the European Union and the European Commission. The first stage, covering a solution to key tasks defined by strategic priorities and drafting of the Action Plan for the Information Security of the Slovak Republic for 2008-2013, will cost the state budget SKK 6 million (EUR 199,200). The budget of the second stage will depend upon the Action Plan for the strategy.

The paper has of three basic levels. The first level defines Slovakia's long-term strategic objectives in information security, covering some important problems. The second level describes strategic priorities and the third level spells out the most important problems reflected in key tasks. The strategy further contains outlines, distribution of competencies, suggested orientation, priorities and steps on the way to attain set objectives. Part of the paper is a basic description of individual tasks aimed at ensuring protection of Slovakia's digital environment to the extent of non-confidential information. Regarding handling of information, the paper mentions information leaks, illegal use of information and violation of data integrity.
